 ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

At Eastgate Dental & Cosmetic Centre, we provide root canal treatment where infected tooth pulp in removed, cleaned and sealed to prevent further infection. It aims to relieve pain, save the tooth, and restore its function.

WHAT IS ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure used to treat an infected or damaged tooth pulp. During the procedure, the infected pulp is removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned, and sealed to prevent further infection. This treatment aims to alleviate pain, save the tooth from extraction, and restore its function.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

The signs and symptoms of pulp damage include:
-
Pain
-Swelling in the gum
-Prolonged
sensitivity to hot or cold,
-
Tenderness in the gum
-
Bad taste in the mouth.

This can occur because of extensive decay, trauma, fractures in teeth, excessive tooth wear or severe gum disease.

Occasionally, there
may be not any signs or symptoms of a damaged pulp. However, if left untreated it can lead to further continual pain, swelling and loss of supporting bone structure around the teeth.

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?

Root canal treatment involves the removal of the damaged or infected pulp tissue with specialist equipment. The root canals are then thoroughly cleaned and filled, followed by restoration (filling or crown) to seal the tooth to prevent repeat infection and to strengthen. Though the nerve supply in the teeth will be removed, the tooth is still able to function normally.

Root canal treatment is typically carried out under
local anesthetic and is relatively painless. Following treatment, the tooth may be sensitive for a few days due to inflammation in the surrounding tissues and can usually be relieved by taking over-the-counter painkillers.

Root canal treatment has a
high success rate, however, due to the complexity of the root canal system in some teeth, treatment can fail or a referral to a specialist may be required. Complications can arise during treatment such as missed canals, excessively curved canals, fractures of instruments, and perforations.
