TOOTH EXTRACTION

At Eastgate Dental & Cosmetic Centre, tooth extraction is offered when a tooth is beyond repair. The tooth is removed from its socket in the jawbone.

WHAT IS TOOTH EXTRACTION?

When a tooth is beyond repair, removing the tooth by extraction is the best option. Various methods of assessment including an x-ray will determine whether a tooth requires extraction or not.

Following an in-depth medical history recording including medication, allergies, diet and smoking status, the x-ray will be assessed, and a clinical examination of the tooth will be carried out.
Teeth may require removal if you have:
-    A severely fractured tooth
-    Impacted wisdom teeth
-    Crowded teeth
-    Dental abscess
-    Gum disease

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR TOOTH EXTRACTION?

The tooth removal is typically carried out under local anaesthetic to numb the area, gently loosens the tooth using specialized instruments, and carefully extracts it. There are several methods of sedation available to you if you are particularly anxious. Please have this discussion with your dentist prior to your appointment. On rare occasions, extractions may be referred to the hospital if they are complicated or if you require general anaesthetic.

WHAT IS THE MAINTENANCE AFTER A TOOTH EXTRACTION?

After the procedure, most people resume their daily routine unless the extraction has been particularly complicated or required stitches to close the socket. Post-operative care instructions are provided to promote healing and minimise discomfort.  These instructions may include avoiding certain foods and practicing good oral hygiene. In some cases, a dental implant, bridge, or denture may be recommended to replace the extracted tooth and restore oral function and aesthetics.

Some general discomfort may be experienced following your appointment over the next few days. Over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen can be taken to ease the pain.
